UNI-COMPARTMENT KNEE REPLACEMET- What you should know about ?
Also Known as Partial Knee Replacement/Half Knee replacement
In a total knee replacement surgery, damaged bone and cartilage is resurfaced with metal and plastic components.
In uni-compartmental knee replacement (also called “partial” or half knee replacement) only a portion of the knee is resurfaced. This procedure is an alternative to total knee replacement for patients whose disease is limited to just one area of the knee.
Partial knee replacement is a surgical treatment option that replaces (or resurfaces) only the damaged portion of the knee while conserving knee ligaments and unaffected cartilage. Patients with unicompartmental knee arthritis have
cartilage degeneration in only one section or compartment of the knee. It is also called as uni-compartmental Knee
replacement or Unicompartmental Knee arthroplasty.
Let us Get to Basics
The knee joint is composed of primarily three bone articulation – The Tibia ( leg bone ), the femur (thigh bone ) and the
patella ( kneecap). Our knee is also divided into three major compartments:
- Medial compartment (the inside part of the knee)
- Lateral compartment (the outside part)
- Patellofemoral compartment (the front of the knee between the kneecap and thigh bone)
In arthritis the cartilage of these joints gets worn and subsequently the bone starts rubbing on bone and pain start Usually the cartilage protecting the bones of the knee slowly wears away.
This can occur throughout the knee joint or just in a single area of the knee.
In advanced stages the leg starts bowing and the biomechanics is changed and may also lead to a stress fracture.
It is mandate to understand in replacement surgeries the cartilage which gets worn is replaced with metal and plastic combination and the biomechanics or the alignment which gets hampered or distorted is restored.
Total Knee Replacement has been a successful procedure and patients do benefit and the result is an improvement
in the quality of life. When the disease is limited to only one compartment we also refer as Medial compartment
osteoarthritis or Lateral compartment osteoarthritis. Sometimes as it happens that only one compartment may get
worn and may be the cause of pain.
And here comes the concept of Half or Partial knee Replacement or unicompartmental Knee Replacement.
By doing so a partial knee replacement the disease may get contained and the pain will go away.
